CHAPTER 21

My eyes traced the towering mountains surrounding us as we approached a little city. Shadow had said we were almost there, so the city had to be where they’d built the refuge.

We passed a sign that said, “WELCOME TO PAYNE, COLORADO!”

I lifted my eyebrows.

“You live in a place called ‘Payne’?”

“We thought it would be ironic to put the Rejected Mate Refuge in a town pretty much called ‘pain’.” Shadow admitted with an embarrassed grin. “Also, we had insider info that said the property here was about to be worth a lot more. We were broke back then, so we bought cheap and now everything we own is worth a shit-ton of money.”

“That’s nice.” I looked back out the window.

The mountains were dotted with massive mansions, except a couple of the ones in the middle that were dominated by a massive ski resort. It was summertime, but I could see a couple of the lifts running even then.

“The resort does mountain-biking in the off-season,” Shadow added. “It keeps people coming to the city year-round. The view helps too.”

“No kidding.” My eyes trailed over rows and rows of old-fashioned homes that had clearly been built recently. It was a mix of old and new that I found gorgeous.

But, being a baker with zero education or money, I knew I’d never be able to afford anything in Payne. I’d stay long enough to make sure Knox was alright, help the rabid wolves regain their sanity, and gather my courage to face my family after being rejected. And then I’d go back to Daisy, Utah, where everyone I knew and loved lived.

I’d go back to Roll With It. I’d finally get home to my apartment over the bakery, and there, I’d pick up the pieces of my broken heart.

My sisters had kept the bakery running while I was gone, I knew. Grace, my oldest sister, was the one who’d opened it after she met her mate. It was traditional for a male wolf to move to whichever pack his mate lived in, unless he was expected to become alpha or something.

Though my sister had opened the bakery, it was my brainchild. I was the one who loved to bake; she was the one who handled the finances and cash register and stuff.

Amelia was the second-oldest in my family, and she and her mate were still in the never-leave-the-bedroom phase of things. But she covered for me and Grace whenever we needed her, because she still needed to pay her bills.

As much as I missed my bakery, and my tiny studio apartment above her, I was dreading returning. Mostly because I knew I’d have to see my sisters and their adorable relationships with their mates while knowing I could never have what they had.

When I went back to Daisy, being rejected would feel a lot more real.

I’d survive it, of course. If just to stick it to Asshole.

“So, we’ve had plans to fix up the refuge for a while,” Shadow began, as Ryker turned down a dirt road a good distance away from the ski slope area of Payne.
